Seasonal River Walk – Summer Walk (6th Walk) 9th JULY 2026

We will be holding our sixth seasonal walk on Thursday 9th July 2026 at 10.30am. On this seasonal walk last year we had had the pleasure of great butterfly and plant viewing. It can be very hot and if this is predicted we will start earlier or postpone the walk. There may be overgrowth on the path of Nettles and Thistles despite dramatic clearance by the County Council earlier this year. Wasps and Horseflies may be a problem and Giant Hogweed can be found.

Work is supposedly commencing on the boardwalk near the Quy roundabout and this may change our route slightly. However as I write this has not yet started.

We would be delighted if you could join us particularly if you are happy to help with identification of plants birds or butterflies.

Route

Each seasonal walk meets at The Windmill Little Wilbraham. CB215LG and follows the same route from Little Wilbraham, along the footpath on the south side of the river to the footbridge just south of the A14 Quy roundabout. We cross the bridge and follow the permissive path over council land, returning via Long Drove back to Little Wilbraham.

The objective of these walks is to document and view the river in all four seasons from the same reference points, helping us understand seasonal changes in flora, fauna, and river flow. Our observations are recorded and shared with the Environment Agency, who are also collecting related data.

We keep records of bird and animal sightings and photograph vegetation and views at regular points. Walkers are encouraged to share any knowledge they have of the wildlife, vegetation, or history of the river.

Distance & Terrain

The walk is just over four miles, takes approximately two hours, and is flat, using public footpaths.

IMPORTANT SAFETY NOTICE – PLEASE READ

• Sturdy footwear is recommended

• Dress for the weather.

• Please bring your medication if you have allergies .

• Bring water, sunhats and cream if hot.

• The walk may feel more challenging than at other times of year.

We do not prepare the footpaths beyond checking for obvious or unexpected hazards. Walkers take part at their own risk, so please be realistic about your ability to complete the route. There is no recovery system along the walk except from the A1303 layby.

Dogs are welcome but must be under control and on a lead where there may be nesting birds. There may be cattle at some points.

Facilities & Parking

• Parking is available at The Windmill Mill Road, Little Wilbraham. CB215LG. Additional parking at the A1303 layby south of the A14 outside Island Cottage, where you may also join the walk halfway

• Toilet facilities are available at the start and finish

• Water will be available if needed

The Hole in the Wall pub in Little Wilbraham is open at lunchtime and offers coffees but you will be welcome for a drink and biscuits on your return to The Windmill.
